Attacking & Defensive Transitions (March 10th - March 16th)

Objective: Players will gain the tools necessary to begin and stop counter attacks, allowing them to control all moments of the game!

Coaching Points:

Attacking Transition:

  1. Commit defender

  2. Analyze space between defender and ball

  3. Analyze space behind defender

  4. Decision: Dribble or pass (try to add disguise)

  5. Change of pace after ball beats defender ball

Defensive Transition:

  1. Arrive at the ball quickly

  2. Slow down as you get close

  3. Get low and delay

  4. Wait for a trigger to win the ball

    • bad touch

    • attacker’s head is down

    • attacker turns their back

Arrival Activity

Dribbling Square with change of tempo

1UP 1v2 to 2v1 Transition Activity

Structure

  • Set up an area where 18-14 yards is the halfway line, with enough width for a 2v1

  • set up a big goal facing a bownet

  • Place cones of the same colour on either side of the goal, those are the where the defenders start

  • place a cone beside the small goal, this is where the attackers start

  • the actions start with the defenders playing a pass to the attacker, from there its 1v2

  • the attacker tries to score for 3 points, and the defenders try to score on the small goal for 1 point

    Progression/Regression

  • add a timer on the action

  • add an attacker that is making a late run(5 second head start)

  • take away a defender

Continuous Transitional 1v1 Game

Structure

  • a normal small sided games pitch

  • set up a cone on each side of each goal

  • set up 2 teams and place them diagonally from each other

  • one team will begin as a defender, the other will have the ball as the attacker

  • the game starts when the defender runs into the field of play

  • from there the attacker will step in to create a 1v1

  • they will then play out a 1v1 game either ending with a goal from the attacker, a goal from the defender, or the ball goes out of play

    • if the attacker scores or the ball goes out, the attacker will become the defender with the next person in line becoming the new attacker

    • if the defender wins the ball back and scores, they stay as a defender

  • enforce quick thinking after the 1v1 action and into the next (quick reactions from AT to DT, and vice versa)

    Progression/Regression

  • switch the sides and match ups of players

Cone Drop Transition Game (LARGE PITCH)

Structure

  • Set up a LARGE sided game pitch

  • set up 2 teams

  • every player has a cone in their hands, as soon as they touch the ball they drop their cones

  • in defensive transition players will have to run to pick up their cone before defending

    Progression/Regression

  • touch restrictions

  • players can only grab their cone

  • players can grab any cone of their colour

Partner Session Alternative

Speed Dribbling 1v1

Structure

  • set up a normal small sided games pitch, with lines set into 3rds

  • set up a cone beside each net, diagonally from eachother

  • players will start on their cone

  • when the coach yells “go”, players are trying to dribble around the opposite goal and get across the line to score

  • the winner of that action gets a point and will receive another ball from the coach

  • from there its a 1v1 for another point

    Progression/Regression

  • 2 laps of the nets

  • difficult passes into the 1v1 attacker

Grassroots Session Plan

Arrival Activity

Change of Tempo Dribbling Square

Structure

  • Dribble like a sloth

  • Dribble like a cheetah

  • Regular Speed

  • Coaches choice

1UP Revenge Tag

Structure

  • set up a large box

  • Normal game of tag

  • start with 1-2 taggers

  • If you tag a player, they then become the tagger

  • every tag is worth 1 point

  • if you tag-back the player that tagged you, you get 2 points

    Progression/Regression

  • Add a ball

  • everyone has a ball except taggers

    • if taggers kick out the players ball, they must do 5 “I’m a stars” before they can get back in

    • if the taggers secure possession of the ball, they get 2 points, and the other player becomes the tagger

    • if you secure possession from the person you just lost the ball to 4 points

1UP Attacking Transition Number Game

Structure

  • set up a 25 yard area, with the same width as the 18 yard box

  • set up a small goal on the opposite line to the big goal

  • set up an attacking cone on one side line 2-3 yards past the 18 yard line

  • set up a defending cone on the opposite side 2-3 yards inside the 18 yard line

  • the action starts with the coach calling a number(s)

  • the coach passes the ball in the middle (attackers should win it)

  • the attackers are trying to score on the big goal, the defenders in the small goal

  • 2-3 minute rounds, then switch the teams to the other side

    Progression/Regression

  • add a timer on the action

Unrestricted Small Sided Game

Structure

  • Normall SSG

  • Play Proper throws, corners, and free kicks for players to learn the game
